Greater Cleveland has some of the best healthcare institutions in the world, but we also have some of the worst health outcomes among our population.
While quality medical care is essential, it’s not nearly enough. We must continue to focus on access, health education, and the root causes of poor health beyond the healthcare system.
Addressing the Social Determinants of Health
The Institute for H.O.P.E. at MetroHealth focuses on improving the social and economic conditions—access to healthy foods, transportation, housing, and other drivers that impact healing—in order to have healthier outcomes for everyone in Cleveland.
Food as Medicine Program
Food insecurity among people with chronic illnesses is a serious, urgent health threat. The MetroHealth Food as Medicine program provides free, nutritious food for patients with certain health conditions who are also facing food insecurity. In 2022, program visits increased 86% over the previous year and resulted in fewer inpatient visits, reduced healthcare costs, and improvements in A1C and systolic blood pressure.
Connecting Leaders, Addressing Issues
MetroHealth is deepening partnerships with local leaders to collaborate and elevate work around improving access, eradicating health disparities, and advancing health equity.
Community Advisory Councils
The community input provided during Dr. Steed’s first 100 days listening tour was so invaluable that MetroHealth is forming Community Advisory Councils to continue the conversation. Councils will identify issues that prevent good health and recommend solutions. Members of Community Advisory Councils will represent the lived experiences of the diverse communities that we serve.
