About Me
I’m Chair of Surgery at MetroHealth and the Richard B. Fratianne Professor at Case Western Reserve University. I’m originally from Detroit, MI, and proud to be a product of Head Start and public schools. My journey in medicine began with a degree in Neurobiology from UC Berkeley, followed by medical school at Charles R. Drew/UCLA. I completed my general surgery training in Chicago at Rush/Cook County Hospital, then pursued a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care and earned a Master of Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Before coming to Cleveland in 2024, I spent over a decade on faculty at Northwestern and later served as Division Chief of Acute Care Surgery and Associate Chair for Research at the University of Florida Jacksonville. At MetroHealth, I lead a talented team of surgical faculty and staff across seven divisions. I continue to care for patients through emergency general and trauma surgery and in the Surgical ICU, and I’m deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.
My research focuses on injury outcomes, health disparities, trauma mapping, and gun violence, and I’ve authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles. I believe in MetroHealth’s mission to go beyond medical treatment and improve the foundations of community health and well-being—and I’m honored to be part of that work.
