About Me
I’m a board-certified neurologist specializing in sleep medicine. I’ve been with MetroHealth since 2017 and currently serve as the Medical Director of our Center for Sleep Medicine. My passion is helping people better understand and manage sleep-wake disorders—because quality sleep is essential to overall health and well-being.
I studied neuroscience at Johns Hopkins, earned my medical degree from Stanford, and completed my residency and fellowship in neurology and sleep medicine at the University of Washington. I’m also an Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where I help train the next generation of physicians.
Whether you're dealing with insomnia, sleep apnea, or another sleep-related condition, my goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care that helps you rest easier and live better. I’m committed to removing barriers and advancing treatment options so every patient can get the sleep they deserve.
Dr. Carter has served as principal investigator on a number of clinical trials focusing on treatments for sleep disorders. Most recently, these include medications to treat narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) and devices to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

- Fiber-Coupled Multipass NIR Sensor for In Situ, Real-Time Water Vapor Outgassing Monitoring Abstract: This work presents the recent development of a fiber-coupled multipass near-infrared (NIR) gas sensor used to monitor water vapor desorption of small material coupons. The gas sensor design employs a White cell topology to maximize the optical path length over a compact, hand-size footprint. Water vapor concentrations are quantified over a large dynamic range by simultaneously applying wavelength modulation and tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy techniques. A custom headspace optimized...
- Gritting through it: caregiver grit as a source of resilience in families affected by pediatric cancer Abstract: CONCLUSION: Among families affected by pediatric cancer, higher levels of caregiver grit were associated with lower caregiver posttraumatic stress symptoms, and in turn, lower child psychological difficulties. Results suggest that grit is a potential target for promoting both caregiver and child resilience in pediatric cancer services. Longitudinal research should examine how caregivers harness grit, as a possible component of resilience, throughout the cancer treatment and survivorship...
- Self-compassion promotes social safeness in patients with eating disorders: A 12-week longitudinal study Abstract: CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that the cultivation of self-compassion may facilitate the feelings of social safeness that individuals with eating disorders generally lack. Results therefore highlight the role that the development of self-compassion can play in fostering social safeness in people with psychological disorders.
- Still a 'boys' club': a qualitative analysis of how gender affects a career in anaesthesia in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Abstract: Gender inequity remains an issue in anaesthesia despite increasing numbers of women training and achieving fellowship in the speciality. Women are under-represented in all areas of anaesthetic research, academia and leadership. The Gender Equity Subcommittee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists recently conducted a survey asking "Does gender still matter in the pursuit of a career in anaesthesia in 2022?". The survey was distributed to a randomly selected sample of 1225...
- Recommended protocols for the Multiple Sleep Latency Test and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test in children: guidance from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Abstract: The American Academy of Sleep Medicine commissioned a task force of clinical experts in pediatric sleep medicine to review published literature on performing the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test for diagnosis and management of central disorders of hypersomnolence among children and adolescents. This paper follows a format similar to that of the paper "Recommended protocols for the Multiple Sleep Latency Test and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test in adults:...
- The relationship between difficulties in the regulation of positive and negative emotions and binge-eating symptoms in young adults Abstract: It is well-established that binge-eating (BE) is linked to emotion regulation (ER) difficulties. However, research to date has focused almost exclusively on difficulties regulating negative emotions, with little attention to the relationship between positive emotion dysregulation and BE. Further, research is inconclusive regarding which specific facets of ER difficulties are most strongly associated with BE behaviour. Therefore, the current study examined whether difficulties regulating both...
- False positive urine amphetamine immunoassay due to solriamfetol Abstract: Solriamfetol is a schedule IV-controlled substance used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness resulting from narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea. We present a patient prescribed solriamfetol who tested positive for amphetamines on a routine urinary toxicology screen despite patient denial of illicit drug use, raising the possibility of a false positive amphetamine screen. Spiking studies were performed on negative urine, and different concentrations of solriamfetol drug on 2 different...
- Machine diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using a novel fast-response capnometer Abstract: CONCLUSION: The N-Tidal™ device can be used to accurately diagnose COPD in near-real-time, lending support to future use in a clinical setting.
- A vignette study of mental health literacy for binge-eating disorder in a self-selected community sample Abstract: CONCLUSIONS: Compared to previous studies, our findings suggest that current BED MHL among members of the public is better, but further improvements are needed. Initiatives to increase knowledge and awareness about the symptoms, causes, and treatments for BED may improve symptom recognition, help-seeking, and reduce stigma.
- Relational bullying and disordered eating: Testing a moderated mediation model of the role of shame and self-compassion Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Experiences of relational bullying (RB) in adolescence are associated with the development of disordered eating. This association may be related to heightened shame resulting from perceived social inferiority, low social rank, and/or negative evaluation by others. Self-compassion may act as a protective factor against the influence of RB on shame and disordered eating. In the current study, we investigated whether shame mediated the relationship between recalled RB and current...

- Orthorexia symptoms and disordered eating behaviors in young women with cancer Abstract: CONCLUSIONS: Young adult women with cancer show elevated orthorexia symptoms and disordered eating behaviors, which are associated with potentially modifiable psychosocial factors.
- Efficacy of expansion pharyngoplasty and hypoglossal nerve stimulation in treating sleep apnea Abstract: CONCLUSION: ESP can be effective in eliminating the CCC of the VP thus making patients become HGNS candidates. In selected OSA patients, who have multilevel upper airway obstruction with complete concentric VP collapse, the combination of ESP and HGNS insertion should be considered as a planned 2-staged approach.
- Anion exchange and extraction chromatography tandem column isolation of zirconium-89 (89Zr) from cyclotron bombarded targets using an automated fluidic platform Abstract: The long-lived positron emitter ^(89)Zr is a highly promising nuclide employed in diagnostic Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. Methods of radiochemical processing to obtain ^(89)Zr for clinical use are traditionally performed with a single hydroxamate resin column. Herein, we present a tandem column purification method for the preparation of high-purity ^(89)Zr from cyclotron bombarded natural Y metal foils. The primary column is a macroporous, strongly basic anion exchange resin on...
